What are the steps to becoming a credentialed teacher?

• Begin with a bachelor’s or higher degree.
   
• Take and pass the CBEST (California Basic Education Skills Test).
  
      For information on the CBEST
   
• Research which school districts you would like to work for and which are hiring. Submit your
  application with those individual districts. Secure a teaching position.
  
      For a list of San Mateo County Schools
   
• Investigate if you have subject matter competency.
  
      For a list of Commission Approved Teacher Credentialing Programs for both Multiple and Single Subjects

You may also need to contact a university department chair to review your transcripts to determine if you have the courses necessary for subject matter competency in the subject in which you would like to teach. (Preferably contact the chair of the university where you would like to complete your teaching credential courses). If you do not have this competency, you will need to pass subject matter exam(s).
