The County Board of Education is authorized by Article IX, Section 3.3 of the California State Constitution and State laws. It is comprised of seven members who are elected to four-year terms on a countywide basis. Each member is a registered voter in the Trustee Area he/she represents. The Board elects officers at its annual organizational meeting in December. Regular meetings of the Board are held at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the San Mateo County Office of Education.

Board Responsibilities
- adopt policies for the County Office of Education
- serve as the governing board for the Regional Occupational Program (ROP)
- review and approve the annual budget of the County Office of Education
- hear interdistrict attendance appeals, district expulsion appeals and charter school petitions
- adopt the curriculum for Court and Community Schools
- advocate on behalf of education at the local, county, state and national level
