The Tinsley court-ordered desegregation program allows students of color living in the Ravenswood City School District attendance area who will be entering kindergarten, first or second grade in the following year to apply for transfers to the following seven districts: Belmont-Redwood Shores, Las Lomitas, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Portola Valley, San Carlos and Woodside. Non-minority students in those seven districts and Redwood City may apply for transfers to Ravenswood.
Once granted, the transfers are permanent and students may remain in their new districts until they graduate, provided they do not move out of their attendance area.
Free bus transportation is provided for Tinsley students.
A limited number of new transfers are available each year. The application period opens on September 15 of each year, for the following school year. Students are chosen by lottery. Parents are encouraged to apply by November 15, in order to participate in the lottery. All transfers are voluntary; students will not be assigned to other districts unless they request transfers.
Applications are available from the districts listed above, or from the San Mateo County Office of Education.
