Anne E. Campbell, County Superintendent of Schools
San Mateo County is home to over 90,000 students, 5,500 teachers, 182 schools, and 23 school districts. Our goal at the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) is to ensure that all those we serve receive the support and assistance they need. Whether it’s accessing professional development opportunities from our Instructional Services Division, finding appropriate educational placements for students with special needs through our Student Support Services Division, or helping local districts with financial management issues through our Fiscal and Operations Services Division, the San Mateo County Office of Education serves as a vital hub of support to local public schools.
As I begin my term as San Mateo County Superintendent of Schools, I am committed to working toward closing the achievement gap, achieving school funding reform, expanding access to quality preschool, and ensuring that all students in our county are prepared for success in the 21st Century global economy. I look forward to working together with the County Board of Education, County Office staff, and colleagues from throughout the County and California to make sure our public schools are the best they can be.
Our public schools face difficult challenges during 2010-11 and in the years ahead. We must provide our students with an education that prepares them for participating in a global economy. Yet, the lingering effects of the recent recession will continue to have a profound economic impact upon what local schools are able to do. As educators, we will need to be much more resourceful and innovative as we work to meet the needs of today’s students with reduced resources. This will require looking outside the walls of our schools to partner with local governments and non-profit organizations to develop ways we can optimally leverage the resources we do have. I look forward to helping foster such collaboration.
